Being glued to your computer workstation desk for most hours of your day, everyday, can be putting a lot of pressures and tensions on your health. Although, this has become a routine for you, it is still essential that you make a health-check every now and then since sitting in front of your computer all day everyday is not really that good for your body.
Aside form the backaches that it will produce, sitting this way all day can also bring about a definitely bad posture and ultimately can strain your eyes. On a lighter note, this situation should not be treated as an ordeal, or something that is beyond your human control. There are actually things, simple things that you can do in order to favor your health while trying to work and make a living.
Consider the following health-checks that give focus on your posture and on how to improve it. It will not hurt you if you try and contemplate on these things that will make working with your computer workstation desk still manageable and bearable despite the strenuous pressures and stress.
- Firstly, your back should have the support it needs in order to make it still on a straight position. It is also wise to make sure that your top monitor should be level with your eyes. If there is the tendency for you to either look down or up, then adjusting the height of the monitor should be done. And to avoid Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (a tingling or numbness you feel on your hand and wrist caused by a key nerve in the wrist), make sure that your wrist will not lie on the keyboard or even on the mouse pad; this is of course unless your mouse pad has something there for your wrist. Check also the position of your knees; make sure that they are only slightly higher than you hip. And then there is your feet, they should always be flat on a step of your stool or something or on the floor itself.
- Try some simple exercises that will stretch your legs, torso, neck, and arms while you are sitting. These exercises will help you in preventing your body from feeling stiff. Simple rolling and stretching while still sitting down will be a great relief for those tired and aching small parts of your body.
- No matter how busy your day might be, try to stand up every 30 minutes or so and walk around a bit, even in your place. This activity will make it sure that your blood will still have its continuous circulation especially in your legs and arms, and at the same time it would also keep those parts of your body from getting too much strained. Taking a short relaxing walk around the office or in your home if you’re working from home, may just be the breaks that your body needs in order to revive it. It will also give you the luxury of squeezing in fresh air and then clear your minds a little bit.It is wise to give your eyes the needed and most deserving break that they need.
- Once every half an hour, or even more so, shift your eye focus from the screen to any subject around you. It can be the door, the windows, and the outside part of the house or office. Anything or anywhere. Just to relax and take your eyes away the monitor screen and therefore giving you lesser chance of having eye irritation and eve headaches.
- When you experience a downtime in your net connection, or when you need to reboot or maybe download large and several files in your computer workstation desk, get up and make few short trips to other parts of the office or your house. If it would not scandalize anyone, try doing a few sit-ups, jumping jacks, or push-up.
- To give your abdominal muscles a treat, try holding your stomach for even just a few seconds every time you breathe in, then slowly release it when breathing out. Some fresh air will not also be that bad. Then finally, make it a habit to have a bottle of H2O by your side and take in small gulp every 30 minutes or so. And to walk around with a valid reason, take small trips to refill your bottle or glass or jug. This is would welcomed by your legs as well.
It would be unwise to think that the exercises you will do in front or around your computer workstation desk will be enough for your body. It still needs more exercises than it truly deserves. Keep in mind that going to the gym or having your ritual work out, away from your computer desk, is still healthful and it will not be substituted by your computer exercises only. Take note that when our muscles remain stationary or motionless for quite sometime, the circulation will decrease, the muscles will tire and will not be able to perform the required tasks better.
